THE HISTORY OF THE WHALEBONE INN

The Whalebone can be traced back more than two centuries.
It was said that a Whalebone once hung at the front of the building, supporting a rumour that a dead whale had been
found in the River Crouch in 1768.
Just prior to 1905, the building was restored, but late in 1905 the newly restored building was completely destroyed by fire, even though the local community, including the landlord, the
local constable and farm workers, fought hard to save it.
Business continued to run from the stable, which survived the fire, and Gravesend Brewery (who owned the building) rebuilt The Whalebone, and in the early 1920s the buildings were half
rendered.
From the outside, the pub looked pretty much as we see it today.
